Flood engineering

Understand flood constraints before design decisions are made.

Representative image for flood engineering

A clear engineering scope.

Explore how flood information may influence the layout, levels and engineering requirements of a proposed development.

Each project begins with its own requirements. The work, deliverables and inspection limits should be agreed before the assessment or design starts.

Flood information

Review available mapping, reports and the questions relevant to the property.

Development constraints

Consider how flood-related requirements may affect the proposal.

Design coordination

Align the engineering scope with planning advice and the project’s available information.

SERVICE SCOPE

What the work can cover.

The following areas can form part of a project brief. The services, deliverables and suitability for your site are confirmed when the scope is agreed.

Flood information review

Review of available flood mapping, authority information and existing reports relevant to the property.

Site flood constraints

Consideration of how flooding may affect the location, arrangement and feasibility of the proposed development.

Flood-related development assessment

Engineering assessment of the proposal against the flood-related questions and information requirements identified for the site.

Building & site level considerations

Coordination of flood information with proposed floor levels, ground levels and the development layout.

Flood impact considerations

Review of whether the proposal may affect flow paths or flood conditions and what further investigation is needed.

Planning & design coordination

Integration of flood-related engineering information with architectural design, drainage work and planning advice.

Reporting & next-step recommendations

Documentation of the agreed assessment, its assumptions and the further information or actions required.

PROJECT INFORMATION

What to have ready.

Your site and proposal

Provide the property address, a description of the existing building or site, and the work you are considering. Explain whether the enquiry relates to a new design, an existing concern or work already underway.

Available documents

Gather architectural plans, surveys, previous engineering drawings, geotechnical reports, planning advice and relevant photographs. Existing information helps identify gaps before the engineering work starts.

Your priorities

Outline the main questions you want answered, your current project stage and any dates the team needs to coordinate around.

Access and scope

Confirm site access and whether particular structural elements or drainage features are concealed. Inspection, testing, design and construction support may involve different scopes.

DELIVERABLES

Clear information for the next stage.

Depending on the commission, outputs may include engineering drawings, an assessment report, inspection findings or recommendations for further investigation. The quotation should identify the exact documents, review stages and any exclusions, so you know what the engineering work will provide.

SERVICE QUESTIONS

Useful things to know.

Does flood mapping mean a property cannot be developed?

Mapping alone does not answer that question. The proposal and applicable planning requirements need to be considered.

What should I provide?

Provide the property address, survey, plans and any flood advice or reports already available.

Is flood engineering the same as stormwater design?

They are related but address different questions. Flood engineering considers flood behaviour and constraints; stormwater design manages runoff and drainage.
